The 214 Wainwright Fells Tick List Log Book

Alfred Wainwright’s 214 Lakeland fells form one of the most famous walking challenges in the Lake District. It's a journey combines physical fitness, navigation skills, and appreciation for the Lake District's beauty. Many people take years to complete the challenge, although ultra-runners have completed it in days. The 214 Fells are a collection of fells in the Lake District, from the highest, Scafell Pike, to smaller but significant summits like Castle Crag. The challenge is based on Alfred Wainwright's influential seven-volume guidebooks, first published in the 1955.

Alfred Wainwright published his first book, A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, Book One: The Eastern Fells, in May 1955. He began compiling the hand-drawn, handwritten guide in November 1952, marking the start of a 13-year project to document the Lake District fells. It was the first of seven volumes in the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells series, completed between 1955 and 1966. The guides were created entirely in pen-and-ink and remarkably produced by hand. The series has remained in print for over 70 years.

Testimonials

A quite stunning book. I shall take great pleasure in completing the 214 Wainwrights and logging each and every one. A love story in the making. And when I can no longer take to the fells, I shall read this on a cold winter night in front of the fire and reminisce. A diary of a lifetime on those glorious Lakeland Fells.
