Alfred Wainwright published his first book, A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, Book One: The Eastern Fells, in May 1955. He began compiling the hand-drawn, handwritten guide in November 1952, marking the start of a 13-year project to document the Lake District fells. It was the first of seven volumes in the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells series, completed between 1955 and 1966. The guides were created entirely in pen-and-ink and remarkably produced by hand. The series has remained in print for over 70 years.

A quite stunning book. I shall take great pleasure in completing the 214 Wainwrights and logging each and every one. A love story in the making. And when I can no longer take to the fells, I shall read this on a cold winter night in front of the fire and reminisce. A diary of a lifetime on those glorious Lakeland Fells.
